R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894)
R. M. (Robert Michael) Ballantyne was a Scottish writer of young adult literature, born in Edinburgh in the nineteenth century. From the age of sixteen to twenty-two he lived in Canada, working in Hudson's Bay Company, but in 1847 he returned to Scotland and wrote his first book - "Life in the Wilds of North America," or, "Hudson's Bay." He gave himself fully to the writing career in 1856 and began a series of young adult adventure tales, which were widely celebrated during his time and through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; his dedication for trying to bring boys to manhood and the values in his stories were more appreciated then than they are now. His book "The Coral Island" was the basis for Robert Louis Stevenson's famous "Treasure Island," and the latter author even makes mention of Ballantyne in the introductory poem of his work. Ballantyne traveled widely throughout his life, researching for his stories, and died in Rome, Italy, at the age of sixty-eight.
